Last week I had the privilege to attend the #RedLovesGap Red Magazine spring high street event at Gap on Oxford Street, London. The event brought together a great British fashion and lifestyle magazine, Red, with much loved high street favourite, Gap, with a focus on new season and four key trends for Spring/Summer.
It’s the start of an exciting new era at Gap, with a superstar creative director recently installed at the helm. Rebekka Bay, Danish born but based in the Gap New York Office, who has taken the reins at one of our favourite stores in the UK.
As we sipped on champagne and enjoyed the bright energetic store in the heart of London’s shopping district, Red’s fashion and shopping editor, and founder of style blog Wearingittoday.co.uk, Laura Fantacci talked us through four key “hero pieces” for Spring/Sumer 14 available at Gap.

The White Shirt
Hero piece number one is the white shirt. Recently I was interviewed on this very piece and its versatility in the wardrobe as a staple that sees us through decade upon decade. Gap have it right this season by a slightly longer in length tail to give a more casual look and a lightness for summer. Try the Textural Stripe Tunic for this style. It looks great with cropped boyfriend jeans and a wedge or even worn loosely over a bright pencil skirt for the office with black heels.
Grey Marl Sweatshirt
As a lover of a grey marl teeshirt, I was very pleased to hear that the Gap grey marl sweatshirt is the second hero piece of SS14. Laura announced it as “here to stay” whether you wear is in a sports luxe casual way or off set a dressy look with it. The marled sweatshirt from Gap this season is a perfect piece to wear over a white shirt and skinny cropped trousers for the office, think Paris chic with a pair of brogues. Or jazz up a night out with a sequinned pencil skirt with this marled sweatshirt casually worn on top – I love this great mix of trends for a night time look.
Denim Jacket
The third hero piece is the denim jacket. I was at the event with a friend I have known from school, this piece allowed us a trip down fashion memory lane as to the many great, and less great denim jackets we have owned. As Laura explained it is a classic piece and “a great holiday packing staple as it hardly every creases”, chuck it in your bag and wear it as soon as you get to your destination. I particularly like this 1969 destructed collarless cuffed denim jacket from Gap, as it is slightly different to your standard, collared jacket that can often look a little like a denim shirt. I think it just gives a slightly edgy, different look from the denim you will see this season. Now you could go double denim here if you so wish or team with Laura’s hero piece number four….
Ankle skimming trouser
The fourth hero piece “suits any body shape, great with flats or heels” and I couldn’t agree more with Laura. I own at least four pairs of ankle skimming trouser in an array of prints (mostly from Gap I might add) and I just love them. For a casual look with a loose fitting striped tee-shirt or a smart blouse and sweater for the office. You can’t go wrong. I rather like these skinny mini skimmer khakis for a slight twist on the look. Think Italian city chic with black ankle skimming trousers and a light cashmere sweater or a varsity bomber jacket and grey marl teeshirt for a relaxed lunch with the girls.
As Laura told us at the Red event “ A great pair of good fitting jeans, a great heal and a cover up is a safe outfit of mine” – Gap couldn’t cover more of those bases if it tried.
